I can't get the video to embed for some reason, but here's a link to a penguin's first swim.

[livejournal.com profile] robinwest sent me the Chicago Tribune article on how giant penguins may once have roamed in Peru, and [livejournal.com profile] ladykoori sent me the illustrated Discovery Channel version (pic copied above). It's probably a good thing they're extinct or my son would want to move to Peru to get one as a pet!

This is the penguin I got my obsessed son as a gift after his violin recital, instead of flowers. It was a very popular choice. *g* I found it at a local Hallmark store.

From CNN, "Penguins start rockin' when stones arrive" -- the Gentoo and Rockhopper penguins at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, getting busy for mating season by building nests.

Also, my uncle sent this eggplant penguin picture to me. Apparently it is from Food For Thought!

Our family took a trip to England and Wales, staying mostly in the vicinity of Bristol, during the course of which we visited four zoos with penguins. The highlight was a visit to Dudley Zoo where our younger son got to meet the chicks of the penguin a friend had "adopted" there for him. Here are some of the photos:

My local news station had a story about a baby penguin needing spinal surgery at the Maryland Zoo. We have met many of the penguins there, possibly including his parents. Here is a photo from the news service:

An refreshing news comes from London Zoo a day before valentine's day.

One of their rockhoppers, Roxy, published a myspace in search for love.

She's a cute rockhopper, she doesn't have the diva attitude though she's a world-class celebrity, and she lovingly admitted have a body type of 33cm with some extra bagage. You can say, she keeps her head down to earth.
You can check her out and (if you have a myspace account) invite her as a friend at http://www.myspace.com/roxyrockhopper

Hopefully, this breakthrough from Roxy will encourage more people to fall in love to Roxy and her endangered relatives out there!!

Yahoo! reports that a Fiordland Crested penguin washed ashore in Australia and was taken to a zoo in Sydney, where he was saved and will hopefully reproduce with the zoo's two lonely females...

Article here! Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] robinwest!

Reuters (via Yahoo) had this adorable photo along with this alarming news about Rockhopper penguin numbers tumbling in the South Atlantic.

Our penguin has been all around the world - Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, America. Here are a few photos:

Steuben Glass offers the Penguin Collection -- Darby Webster's two playful Sliding Penguins (new for 2006), the classic Satin Penguin and George Thompson's 1973 Polished Glass Penguin. Quite adorable, but a mere $1,200! o_O

Now we can make our own garden penguins when it snows! Plow & Hearth has kits, though I suspect it would not be difficult to buy foam board at Michael's or some other craft store and design our own for a lot less money:

CBS News has posted photos of the "white carpet" premiere for Happy Feet, which includes live penguins as well as the actors in the film and visitors.

Also, a game PSA: We got a coupon for $5 off the Nintendo Happy Feet game at Best Buy with a Burger King toy, but our store still didn't have it on the shelf at lunchtime today (officially it came out yesterday). We checked K-mart, which not only had the game but was giving out little stuffed Mumble penguins with it, a store exclusive. So if you're going to get the game, you may either want to get a toy at Burger King for the Best Buy coupon or you may want to go to K-mart to get the stuffed penguin! (The game comes with a coupon for a free movie ticket.)

So I caved and took my younger son to Build-a-Bear after he brought home a very good report card, because they have Happy Feet penguins and you get a free stuffed fishie if you stuff one by tomorrow!
